Our Gemara references a series of pesukim that describe the two to five fires set aside on the mizbeach. The Shevet HaMusar (24) sees in these verses of joint fires burning steadily, day and night, a symbolic reference to the love, passion and unity that should exist between husband and wife. I will share some select quotes, that speak for themselves:
The main principle is that all depends on whether a man and a woman will be in one heart, with a love bond as a flame is tied in the embers; to be of one body...This can be seen in the text describing the fire and the Olah Sacrifice. It shall burn on the altar all night until the morning. The word, “It”, is multivalent. It is written as “Hu”, but pronounced as “Hiy”. That is, the masoretic text has it as the male pronoun, and the masoretic reading out loud is female. This implies an intertwining between the male and female aspects. If they are able to achieve this unity, then it is an atonement for sins and the Shechinah will dwell with them, bringing protection from harm and all forms of success.
You do not need to be a mystic to know that when there is harmony between husband and wife, physical health, healthy children, and financial success are actualized. In the bustle of daily life, we often need to make split-second decisions that make the difference between success and failure. When we are not being drained by fighting, and feel the love and support of our spouses, we are in a position to seize opportunities and avoid pitfalls.
