Because building resilience is all about relationships, it’s critical that we help the parents and caregivers of the children we serve to have the tools and support they need. This presentation will be centered around ATN’s PATH framework (Promoting Attachment and Trauma Healing) and how this framework can increase understanding, build and strengthen skills and grow emotional resiliency of parents and caregivers. We will focus on the relational aspects of attunement and attachment, and the importance of recognizing co-regulation as the key to acquiring self-regulation skills. We will also discuss how trauma shows up in the classroom and discuss how to help caregivers become advocates for their children impacted by trauma and then dive into self-care for caregivers and completing the stress cycle to avoid burnout.

Learning Objectives:
- describe why it is important that caregivers/parents are taught about early brain development/child development, the importance of attachment, and how to actively teach/encourage regulation skills in their children.
- articulate why building healthy attachment is important and give examples of everyday interactions that build more secure attachment.
- explain the importance of ongoing support and access to self-care needed for caregivers of children with trauma impacts and attachment challenges.
Agenda:
Part 1 will focus on the basics of Trauma and Attachment, ACEs and the paradigm shifts that follow. There will be a deep dive into relational aspects of attunement and attachment along with brain basics and the concept of parenting the whole brain of the child.
Part 2 will explore our PATH framework (Promoting Attachment and Trauma Healing). This is a comprehensive framework of education and supports for caregivers who are parenting children with known trauma effects and/or attachment difficulties. This framework can be used in the classroom setting as well. The overall goals of this framework are to increase understanding; to build and strengthen the skills; and to grow emotional resiliency of parents/caregivers as they create healthy attachments and teach self-regulation to children who have come to their families through foster care, kinship placement, adoption or biologically.
Part 3 will discuss how caregivers can become advocates for their children and collaborate with school personnel as they learn how trauma shows up in the classroom and we will end with discussion of burnout, how to complete the stress cycle and engage in compassionate self-care.
