Ethical Principles in School Settings

Are you allowed to work with students in your private practice? What do you tell parents? How should you handle gifts? Are you a mental health professional, educational personnel, or both? School Social Workers and other Mental Health Professionals are charged with the legal and ethical responsibility to maintain professional boundaries, but the obligation isn’t always so easy to discern. This session focuses on the scope of service and ethical and legal responsibilities of social work practice in an education setting. Issues of boundaries, complicated confidentiality responsibilities, relationships with students and family members, and unique role in the school community will all be explored.

THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO MEET THE NYS REQUIREMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO RECEIVE 3 HOURS OF TRAINING ON MAINTAINING APPROPRIATE PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES (effective April 2023).

THIS COURSE IS NOT NEW YORK STATE SPECIFIC, AND CAN SATISFY ETHICS AND BOUNDARIES TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR ANY STATE.

About the Presenter

Kathryn Krase, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., Principal Consultant with Krase Consultant, is an expert on the professional ethics, and the intersection of ethics with legal responsibilities. She has years of experience consulting with government and community based organizations to develop policy & practice standards.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the ethical and legal responsibility of School Social Workers to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with the students and families they serve.
  2. Describe how to apply a framework for ethical decision-making in the school environment.
  3. Explain how to demonstrate that a youth/student has not been exploited or coerced, intentionally or unintentionally.

Agenda:

Introductions (5 minutes)

Outlining the Ethical Obligations of School Social Workers (30 minutes)

This section will explore the ethical expectations of social workers, and those

specific expectations of school social workers. The unique aspects of the various

roles a social worker plays in the school environment will be highlighted.

Complicated Confidentiality (60 minutes)

This section will explore the complicated expectations related to what school social

workers can, should, should not or cannot share with parent/guardians and other

school personnel.

Maintaining Professional Boundaries (60 minutes)

This section explore concepts related to the appropriate role of school social workers

in relation to the children and families they serve. Dual relationships will be

discussed. The impact of technology will be highlighted, with a focus on social media

and artificial intelligence.

Future of School Social Work (15 minutes)

The section will explore the potential role of school social work in generations to

come.

Conclusions/Questions (10 minutes)
