Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment model for individuals struggling with emotion dysregulation (Linehan, 1993; Linehan, 2015). Renowned for its robust skills component, DBT was the focus of a seminal study in 2015 that compared skills alone versus comprehensive DBT (Linehan et al., 2015). The model comprises four modes of treatment: individual therapy, phone coaching, skills training, and a consultation team for the therapist. Each mode is integral to the overall effectiveness of DBT (Chapman, 2019).
A key element in achieving successful treatment outcomes in DBT is the therapeutic relationship (Rizvi, 2011). Both individual sessions and phone coaching heavily rely on this relationship (Linehan, 1993). This presentation will highlight significant aspects of the therapeutic relationship within DBT. Topics will include strategies for avoiding burnout, leveraging the therapeutic relationship, effectively utilizing phone coaching, and understanding the role of relationship ruptures in developing healthy interpersonal skills for those with severe emotion dysregulation (Bedics & McKinley, 2020; Linehan, 2011; Mehlum, 2021; Ruork et al., 2021).
